Big Blue
Salvia Seeds
Salvia longispicata x farinacea
Extremely showy, brilliant blue flower spikes bloom nonstop from July to frost, with little maintenance. At 24 to 36 in. tall and 18 to 20 in. wide, Big Blue salvia is bigger than nearly all other seed grown annual salvias. Plants thrive in hot, dry conditions
Easy to grow with other sun-loving annuals in garden borders and large patio containers. Flowers attract bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Big Blue salvia is similar to and much better than the revered Salvia 'Indigo Spires.'
We first saw Big Blue salvia at the Trial Grounds at the University of Georgia at the end of September, 2018. Plants were 3 ft. tall, super lush, bushy and healthy, and loaded with gorgeous blooms. We were impressed. As were the judges - out of twelve salvias tested in the Trial Grounds (only Big Blue was grown from seed), Salvia 'Big Blue' was rated the best. And with perfect scores from the end of June until the end of August, Salvia 'Big Blue' was overall, one of the top performing plants of any kind.
Growing Big Blue Salvia Seeds
Sow salvia seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 75°F., germination is in 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings into the garden 12-18 in. apart.
