As a fun way to celebrate Halloween, I want to share photos and facts about some insects that you might find in and around your home and garden. Below are eight possible reasons to start wearing your garden gloves more often.
Potato Bug - I've found potato bugs, also known as Jerusalem crickets, in my garden and once in my bedroom! They hiss and can grow to a length of 2 inches!
Cabbage Looper - This garden pest is most commonly found on cabbage and other related plants such as broccoli and kale.
Earwig - The name combined with pincers capable of causing pain make this common garden pest extra spooky. They're more active at night which might be why most people garden during the day!
Common Garden Spider - These spiders can get over an inch in size, build webs up to 2 feet across and often have bright yellow coloration which seems like it might be warning us of their danger.
Garden Spider with Butterfly Meal - Garden spiders are harmless to humans.
House Centipede - If you want to find one, search your home. I found one by the light switch in my basement.
Jumping Spider - Some species of jumping spiders can jump as far as 8 feet!
Thistledown Velvet Ant - Cute or Scary? You might meet one if you spend some time in the Southwestern United States.
