Bergenia Seeds
In spring, clusters of fuchsia pink, bell-shaped flowers on thick stems rise above vigorous, compact, 6-10 in. tall plants. Large, succulent leaves are leathery and glossy green, picking up bronze tones in cool weather. Shoeshine Rose bergenia makes an excellent ground cover, and grows beautifully in pots or along walkways. A resilient, cold-tolerant, easy-to-grow evergreen perennial, winter hardy to zone 4.
Growing Shoeshine Rose Bergenia Seeds
Plant Bergenia Seeds: Sow seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 70-75°F., germination is uneven over a period of 3-6 weeks. Transplant into the garden 18 in. apart.
Grow Bergenia: Plants prefer part sun in warm climates, full sun where summers are mild. Excellent ground cover and container plants. Bergenia tolerates poor soil, and little to moderate water. More flowers and better appearance in fertile soil with regular water. Bergenia is evergreen in all but coldest climates. Cut plants back once per year to keep growth neat and compact. Divide when clumps become crowded. Bergenia is rabbit and deer resistant plants.
