Mediterranean Spurge
Euphorbia Seeds
Spurge, Mediterranean Euphorbia
Euphorbia characias ssp. Wulfenii
Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Mediterranean spurge has stately whorled spires of silvery-green foliage that stays evergreen in warmer climates. Large rounded clusters of small yellow flowers with showy chartreuse bracts begin blooming in spring and persist until early summer.
Easy care, drought-tolerant and deer resistant plants grow about 3 ft. tall, and are a bit more compact than the straight species Euphorbia characias. Mediterranean spurge self-sows readily; flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. A short-lived, first-year-flowering perennial, Mediterranean spurge is winter hardy to zone 6, and can be treated as an annual anywhere.
Grow Mediterranean spurge in well-draining, sunny garden beds or large containers. Use caution when working with euphorbias: they produce a milky sap that is a skin irritant.
Growing Mediterranean Spurge Euphorbia Seeds
Sow euphorbia seed in cell packs or flats using a sterile seed starting mix, lightly cover. Kept at 65-70°F., germination averages 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings into the garden 24-36 in. apart after all danger of frost.
