Snowgrass has an attractive, arching fountain-like form, growing to 6 ft. tall in the summer when in bloom. Graceful, 18 in. long, creamy white plumes are like Pampas Grass but with a more light and airy appearance. Clump-forming evergreen leaves take on some coppery red coloration with age.
In its native New Zealand, Snowgrass is commonly called Hunangamoho, and has traditionally been used to thatch roofs. Feathery plumes are dramatically beautiful in large scale fresh or dried floral arrangements. Snowgrass adapts well to most garden conditions with well-drained soil. Winter hardy to zone 6.
How to Plant and Grow Snowgrass
Plant Snowgrass Seeds: Sow Snowgrass seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil and lightly cover. Needs light to germinate. Keep soil evenly moist. Kept at 60-66° F., germination is in 14 to 28 days. Can be direct sown in groups of 3 seeds, spaced 36 inches apart. Thinning Snowgrass seedlings is not required.
Grow Snowgrass: Full sun or part shade. Snowgrass will grow in almost any soil. Prefers fertile soil with average to ample moisture and good drainage. Will tolerate some drought once established. Evergreen clumping, non-invasive, lush and relaxed growth to 3 feet tall when not in flower. Plants require little maintenance, and are deer and rabbit resistant. Moderate size allows Snowgrass to easily combine with other sturdy perennials.
Dig Deeper: The graceful weeping, creamy flowerheads are choice additions to fresh cut or dried arrangements. Seed heads attract birds. Use Snowgrass in groups as accent plants in front of trees, shrubs, or fences, and next to lawns, sidewalks, and driveways. Can be planted near the back of larger mixed borders or on slopes and banks.
