Purple Fairy Tale salvia produces showy spikes of whorled deep violet-blue flowers against beautiful dark purple bracts the first season from July to September. Flowers attract butterflies and will be welcome additions to your summer arrangements. Remove spent blooms to extend the season.
The 18 to 28 in. tall plants look terrific in containers or mixed borders, or mass in the landscape for highest impact. Purple Fairy Tale will tolerate light shade and drought - plants are fuller, bloom is heavier when grown in full to part sun and moist well-drained soil. Cut back after flowering and plants will sometimes bloom again in the fall. Winter hardy to zone 5.
Growing Purple Fairy Tale Salvia Seeds
Sow salvia seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 75°F., germination is in 21-30 days. Transplant salvia seedlings into the garden 18 in. apart, after all danger of frost.
