Santolina
a.k.a. Cotton Lavender, Lavender Cotton
Santolina chamaecyparissus ssp. tomentosa
A drought tolerant shrub with aromatic silvery foliage and yellow button flowers.
Santolina's silvery-gray foliage is fine-toothed and fairly stiff; with a fragrance similar to yet more pungent than lavender. Small golden yellow button flowers stand in multitudes on 6 in. green stems in spring and early summer above the 1-2 ft tall and 3-4 ft. wide mounds.
Santolina takes very well to pruning and shaping, and has been used in knot gardens, rock gardens and as hedges and topiaries since the 15th century. Santolina tolerates coastal conditions with salt spray, and grows best with little water and little to no fertilizer. Plant in well-drained soil or in large containers in full sun. Deer and rabbits dislike Santolina. Evergreen (or evergray) plants are winter hardy to Zone 6.
Growing Santolina
Sow Santolina seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil and barely cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 68°F., germination is in 14-30 days. Transplant into the garden after all danger of frost, spaced 24-36 in. apart.
