Seaside Daisy
a.k.a. Beach Aster
Erigeron glaucus
Native to the US west coast, Seaside Daisy is commonly seen blooming along the bluffs and sand dunes from late winter through early summer. Large lavender pink flowers with prominent yellow centers hover above the 8 to 12 in mounds of leathery, slightly hairy, green spoon-shaped leaves.
Seaside Daisy is drought tolerant in coastal climates, and thrives in windy, coastal areas that get salt spray. It likes full sun near the coast and partial shade when planted farther inland. Seaside daisies dislike climates that are both hot and humid. Plant Seaside Daisy in pots, window boxes, garden beds and borders that have good drainage.
Butterflies and other pollinators love Seaside Daisy flowers, and many birds will visit to eat the seeds. An evergreen perennial, winter hardy to zone 7.
Growing Seaside Daisy
Sow Seaside Daisy seeds in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 68°F, germination is in 14-30 days. Transplant into the garden after all danger of frost 12-24 in. apart.
