Silver Carpet
Snow-in-Summer Seeds
Cerastium tomentosum
Forms low growing, dense silvery-gray carpets to 6 in. tall and 2-3 ft. across. In early summer the plants are smothered in masses of showy snow-white flowers. An excellent choice for a small-scale ground cover, an edging along paths, between stepping stones, or spilling over the sides of large containers. Winter hardy to zone 3.
Growing Silver Carpet Snow-In-Summer Seeds
Plant Snow-in-summer Seeds: Sow seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 70°F., germination is in 14-25 days. Transplant into the garden 12-18 in. apart.
Grow Snow-in-summer: Full sun. Widely adapted, will tolerate cold climates as well as desert heat (in light shade), does not thrive in Deep South regions which are both hot and humid. With good drainage, poor soil is easily accepted. Needs little water once established, will spread rapidly (and could become invasive) in moist soils. Silver Carpet is a more compact, less invasive selection. For best appearance, and to restrict spread, cut back hard after bloom. If bare patches develop, divide and replant in early spring or autumn. Deer and rabbit resistant.
