Matina
Heirloom Tomato Seeds
(OP) 60 days
Matina is a heavy producer of uniform, smooth, round to slightly flattened, rich red fruit full of sweet, tangy, beefsteak-like flavor. Large clusters of 2-6 ounce fruits ripen early in the season, and production continues well into the fall. The healthy, vigorous, indeterminate potato-leaved vines provide ample cover against sun scald. Use Matina tomatoes on sandwiches, or in salads and sauces. A German heirloom.
In the 2017 Swallowtail Garden Seeds test garden Matina produced plenty of fruits during our hot summer. And during the short days of autumn, we found Matina to be among the best cool weather tomatoes we have grown. By early November, when Matina tomatoes were grown under just 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, with night temperatures between 40 and 45°F., plants were loaded with tomatoes, and branch tips continued to flower and set fruit. Nice.
Growing Matina Heirloom Tomato Seeds
Sow seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil and lightly cover. Kept at 75-90°F., germination is in 8-15 days. Transplant into the garden 2-4 ft. apart after all danger of frost.
Heirloom tomatoes grow too large for the typical 3 foot tomato cage. Begin by tying each plant to one 6 foot stake. Then create a 2 foot square with 4 stakes around each plant. Wrap garden twine around the stakes at 6 inch intervals up the square, adding more rows of twine as your plants get taller.
