Ghost Pepper
Hot Pepper Seeds
(OP) 120 days
Ghost pepper, aka Bhut Jolokia is the first pepper to measure higher than 1 million units on the Scoville heat scale, or about 400 times hotter than a jalapeño. An extremely spicy, thin-walled pepper that dries beautifully and ripens to a deep red. Ridged and curvy, similar to a habanero in form, but a bit longer and more tapered. Flavor is also habanero-like in its fruitiness.
Plants will vary in height and bushiness by climate - growing from 3-5 ft. tall where best adapted. Ghost pepper needs a long, hot growing season to mature. The peppers pictured were harvested from a plant we grew in a 3 gallon container.
Use gloves and extreme caution when handling Ghost Pepper seeds and fruits. Much as with Habanero pepper seed, Ghost Pepper seeds require particularly warm soil to germinate. At 80-95°F., germination is in 12-35 days. A heat mat is required for best results. In cooler soils, germination will be erratic.
Growing Ghost Pepper Hot Pepper Seeds
Sow hot pepper seeds indoors in cell packs or flats, 8 weeks before the last anticipated frost. At 70-90°F., germination is in 8-25 days. When the soil has warmed to at least 60°F., transplant into the garden 18-24 in. apart.
